Destiny’s Child – Bills, Bills, Bills
In the summer of 1998 the children of Destiny visited our studios on Horseshoe Way and I can’t believe that 2 decades later I had my arm around Beyonce. In the summer of 99, Destiny was back bigger than ever with this jam.
Bran Van 3000 – Drinking in LA
I love the laid back vibe of this 1997 from the BV3k collective. It has a great narrative, the song structure is innovative and I still turn it up 20 years later.
Savage Garden – Truly Madly Deeply
The ultimate 90s wedding song. If you’re celebrating a 20th wedding anniversary this year, this was likely your song, or at least one you considered. The Savage Garden unplugged performance in the Z lunch room is a top 3 career highlight for me.
Ricky Martin – Livin La Vida Loca
In the summer of 99 I had a crush on one of the back up singers from Savage Garden. I went down to LA to visit her and live life like a local and every single time we turned on the radio, this song was on.
Toni Braxton – You’re Making Me High
I think it was the catsuit video with Toni staring straight at the camera that made this summer 96 hit stick with me. Because damn.
Robyn – Do You Know What It Takes
Before there was Britney, there was Robyn. Looking back on it now, you can see the exact songwriting blueprint that gave us Britney in 98. In the summer of 1997 this song was a fixture on our Hot 10 at 10
Sarah McLachlan – Possession
I can’t not have a Sarah song on this list. Lollapalooza and Lilith Fair defined 90s festivals. I saw the 1996 trial run at Nat Bailey Stadium and the following year at UBC and The Gorge in Washington. This summer marks 20 yrs for Lilith and deserves all the accolades.
