Vancouver’s own, Mathew V played a show at the Rio Theatre last Thursday. Fresh to the scene, he hit the airwaves with his first single “Tell Me Smooth.” We saw his fandom gaining traction and support to launch his latest single “Broken.” From a variety of sounds, his soulful pop music slots itself into its own unique artistry.
We chatted with Mathew V about his hometown show and first full length album V.
Syd – What emotions did you feel when you performed on stage last night in front of your hometown?
Mathew V – It was so amazing. Looking in the crowd and spotting some of my family and friends, it was very heartwarming to say the least.
S – Since the release of your album, how have you noticed the growth of your fandom?
MV – My supporters are so amazing. It’s been awesome seeing this little family grow in the last year. It’s such a supportive and inclusive community and I’m just so proud to associate myself with these amazing individuals.
S – At what moment were you sure you wanted to turn this into a full time career?
MV – I always sang. I always knew it was something that I wanted to do, but when I graduated high school and moved to England, it was really a sink or swim moment for me. It was just me, in a new country alone and naive, but the one thing that I had was my love for music. I promised myself that if every door was closed, I would create a window. I promised myself i wasn’t going to stop until I made it. I took to the internet and learned as much as I could.
S – When you create do you find it easier writing the lyrics or creating the sound of the song?
MV – I typically find the melody way easier. The melody is somewhat of an instinctual thing for me. When I’m humming I know when it feels right and where my instincts want it to go. It’s adding words to those feelings… finding the perfect phrases to communicate how I’m feeling that takes a bit of a longer time for me.
S – Your album has a bit of every sort of genre, was it easy or difficult playing with all these different types of sounds?
MV – I think that the beauty of pop music is that it encompasses so many different sounds and influences. I listen to and enjoy so many different genres of music as I think so many people do, and in turn… they all represent a different part of me as an artist. I stripped down my personal expectations of an artist having to live in one realm, and i took a little exploratory stroll on this record.
S – “Let Me Go” is such a touching song, how do you get into those vulnerable emotions when you’re performing?
MV – When I’m on stage and in the moment, it’s a pretty striking moment for me. Let Me Go in particular always strikes a chord with me. It’s such an emotive vocals deliver, its hard for me not to fall into that emotional pocket when i’m staring into the lights.
S – Which song is your favorite to perform live?
MV – Tell Me Smooth is so fun to perform. It’s the first time that audiences have been singing my lyrics with me off by heart, and that has been such a cool experience.
S – For those who haven’t heard your sound, how would you describe it?
MV – I’d describe my sound as melodic, honest, pop music. Sometimes it’s sassy, sometimes its emotional, there is a bit of something for everyone. I find that I connect with different songs on different days depending on how I’m feeling.
S – Lastly, what’s next for Mathew V?
MV – So much! I’ve spent the last six months working on new music. Pushing my limits and seeing how poppy I can go. I’m really excited about it. Also playing a bunch of fun shows and hopefully travelling to a bunch of new places!
